Why Choose BR LED Bulbs?

on Jul 29, 2020

BR shaped light bulbs are becoming one of the more common sizes of bubs for commercial and residential properties. Traditionally they’ve been more popular in commercial or warehouses. However, with the introduction of smaller and recessed can versions of BR shaped LED lights, BR LED bulbs are becoming more popular.

What is a BR Shaped LED Bulb?

The name of BR bulbs is related to their size and shape. B stands for Bulge and R stands for Reflector, meaning these lights are Bulb Reflector lights. Why bulb Reflector? The name Bulb reflector or BR comes from the light’s design and how they function. Within a BR bulb there are two reflectors, a mirror like coating within the bulb’s glass housing and an extra reflector in the neck of the bulb. This extra reflector makes the bulb have a bulge near the base of the light. The two reflectors found within a BR shaped bulb make the light act as a directional floodlight. Meaning the beam is bright, but not as highly concentrated as a PAR shaped bulb. The beam coming from a BR shaped light due to the two reflectors inside should be more evenly distributed in comparison to a Par that will have a much higher concentrated beam in the center.

As you can see in the picture the shape difference between R shaped and BR shaped bulbs.

BR Bulb’s sizing?

The sizing for BR shaped bulbs is like any other light or bulb’s size. They’re defined by a number related to their diameter. The most common sizes for BR shaped bulbs are BR20, BR30, BR38, BR40.

BR Bulb Sizes

Shape Diameter (inches)
BR20 2-1/2
BR30 3-6/8
BR38 4-6/8
BR40 5

What is the Difference between PAR and BR Bulbs?

PAR and BR shaped bulbs are interchangeable. They’re used for similar lighting functions; they produce bright white beams for task or general lighting. The difference comes in the concentration of their beams. PAR shaped bulbs produce beams at angles no wider than 45°. Making their beams intense spotlights good for task lighting. BR shaped bulbs produce beams with 90° beam angles, making them still able to be used as spotlights if needed as their beam is very bright, but the angle is potentially wide enough to also be used as a floodlight. Both of these shapes of lights are great for workshops, recessed ceiling lighting or warehouses. Anywhere that demands bright white task or general lighting.

BR Bulbs Applications

Where are BR bulbs most suitable to be used? Anywhere that requires bright white lights. They’re great for general or task lighting. Larger BR bulbs are used in workshops, warehouses, etc. However, smaller BR bulbs can be used as retrofit can lights in homes, gyms or shops. Their beam is white and bright geared towards task or general lighting. For their beams they’re highly efficient and don’t produce much heat so used in large scale, BR bulbs are a fantastic lighting option.

SGLEDs BR 40Watt Bulb

SGLEDs BR 40W bulbs have an unique design and efficient performance that make them an ideal choice for indoor spot or floodlighting. They produce a powerful 5500lumens from 40Watts making them one of the most efficient floodlights per watt used. 5500 lumens at 5000K makes these lights ideal for illuminating any tasks. Their little to no heat production allows them to be fantastic for large scale use such as warehouses or shops. However, if you’re looking for a bright light for your home or garage they’re also applicable. The beam angle from these lights is 120° making their illumination less intense in comparison to a PAR shaped bulb of the same size. So they may illuminate wider areas and provide easier lighting for your eyes. This will be good especially if you’re exposed or working under the light for long periods of time.
