Can LED Bulbs Be Used in Enclosed Fixtures?

on Jul 8, 2021

With the replacement of traditional incandescent bulbs on the rise in the interior and on the exterior of our homes. The demand for energy efficient enclosed fixture rated bulbs has increased. However, in the past there has been the common mistake of just replacing your regular bulbs with LED equivalents and going. This has led to the LEDS usually running out of life much faster than usual. Many LEDs in the past have been designed to not be used within semi or fully enclosed fixtures. Leading to consumers placing them in the wrong fixtures without even knowing. When looking to replace an incandescent or traditional bulb with something more efficient, people need to make sure the LEDS are enclosed fixture rated.

What is an Enclosed Fixture?

An enclosed fixture is any sealed fixture with no ventilation. They’re regularly found porch lights, flush mounts, lamps etc. Enclosed fixtures are found in many areas round the home and do require specific LED bulbs. Why do enclosed fixtures cause problems for LEDS? The number one concern for LEDS is heat. If they are placed within a fixture that allows for little to no air flow the build up of heat with reduce their life span. Enclosed fixture LEDs can only fix this by alternating their current to reduce the temperature.

Why Do Traditional Bulbs Perform Better in Heat to Regular LEDs?

All chips are sensitive to heat so why do traditional bulbs do better in heat compared to LEDS? Traditional bulbs have energy restrictors that will reduce the energy output of the bulb as the heat builds up. Regular LED bulbs would not contain energy restrictors. This is why LED bulbs need to be enclosed fixture rated in order to be used in the specific applications. This ensures they have a temperature sensor and an energy restrictor in order to reduce the output and heat of the bulb once the environment has hit a certain temperature.

How to Find Enclosed Fixture Rated Bulbs?

LED bulbs that are able to be used in enclosed fixtures will be listed as enclosed fixture rated. This would be any amazon LED bulbs, Lowe’s or Home Depot. If they are able to be used in these environments, they will be listed as enclosed fixture rated. Their specific safety features will also be listed. Such as; chips designed to withstand very high temperatures, temperature adjustable chips and energy restrictors. This combination will be effective in reducing the problems of heat for an LED as well as being listed on all sales pages.

What is the Best LED Bulb For Enclosed Fixtures?

SGLEDS enclosed fixture rated bulbs are one of the best energy efficient enclosed fixture rated bulbs on the market. They use temperature adjustable chips along with their patented CDHT technology. Ceramic heat sinks, in order to reduce the energy output when necessary as well as dissipate the heat efficiently with as few parts as possible. Regular LED bulbs, especially those that use aluminum heat sinks have more internal parts causing a higher failure rate. Adopting a bulb that only uses ceramic heat sinks and no other internal pieces for productive heat dissipation, makes for a more cost-effective and longer lasting bulb. Homes need reliable energy efficient lighting solutions, SGLEDS enclosed fixture rated bulbs provide better light, better performance and longer lifetimes:
